During lockdown, I began exploring my local environment, starting with my home in the small settlement of Rèinigeadal on the Isle of Harris.
Rèinigeadal was saved from extinction when it became the last place in the UK to be connected by road in 1990. As the island locked down, some of the isolation that existed before the road returned – but without the interconnectedness of the past when Rèinigeadal was one of many small communities linked by footpaths and the sea.
As lockdown eased, I ventured further afield in search of similar communities. A Place Like This is the story of my travels into the parts of Harris and Lewis where the roads don’t go and into the islands’ human past, present and future.
